  • When I was little I had a green dress, and I always called it the lettuce dress, never the green dress. I had forgotten all about it until just recently, when I saw these photos.
The garden in the photos is the garden of my childhood, with the ivy, the pilasters and the pots of lilac, a closed garden. In winter I always forgot that the garden was there and only saw it framed in the windows, and it was in summer that all this variety of greens and little creatures assailed me.
I¹m quite sure there were times when I lazed in the newly watered ivy in my lettuce dress (and I didn¹t remember it until now). What a pity no one took any photos.
I imagine it in the middle of a great August heat, as it was when I took these.
In the midst of a heat that has a smell.
