This work by Guillermo Kuitca represents the map of a woman’s face. Kuitca’s interest in mapping things does have not its origin in the desire to offer us any kind of geographic information; what he really wants is for the cartographic elements to take on a descriptive capacity that goes beyond the merely geographical. The construction of a language that goes beyond the map and is based on the grid and nodes.
Maps of the sensibility and the senses, an analytical journey towards and through the senses by way of a woman’s face, which tracks places that are all but unknown.
This work evokes the particular smells of these rarely visited places, the smell of wet mud of almost untrodden paths, scents of moss rising from limestone moss and of the toadstools born at the base of the trunks of hundred-year-old trees. Perfumes that are found contained in a thick fog like the bottle that contains the essences of the unexamined.
Deconstructing, dissecting, breaking down, blurring and mapping are constant practices in the work of Guillermo Kuitca, exercises of meticulous analysis that evoke and recreate traces of the past.
