reproductibilitat 2.2. colección olorVISUAL
Here at Es Baluard we are continuing with the Reproductibilitat series, which connects the museum’s collection with a number of specialized collections. The interplay between the world of visual art and the sense of smell gives an additional nuance to this reading. As the collector Ernesto Ventós says, ‘Smell is the first sense we develop at birth’.
In its various exhibitions and phases, the Reproductibilitat series presents these public and private specialized collections with a view to opening up lines of exploration and understanding of the evolution of the art image in photography, avant-garde film practices, video art and the electronic media.
This latest show features works from the colección olorVISUAL created by Ernesto Ventós — works never seen before in the Balearic Islands. This allows us to present a selection of outstanding artists and at the same time continue Es Baluard’s educational commitment, taking it here in an innovative direction.
Reproductibilitat 2.2. colección olorVISUAL, curated by Nekane Aramburu, engages with a new and more contemporary period, with artists whose work in video art and new technologies takes us further into the use and consolidation of the moving image for creative practices. The curatorial project includes a selection of works from colección olorVISUAL which serve to generate interrelationships between generations and some of the foremost international artists of today, highlighting the potential educational and the attraction of a collection that gives this exhibition series a new reading: that of Smell.
The show is an assemblage of works in single-channel format, which will be shown on large screens or on monitors, with an attractive and functional spatial design which clearly reflects the evolution of this collection.
The discourse of the exhibition seeks to show how the dematerialization of art and the practices centred on the moving image have influenced the production of contemporary culture and the visual arts. At the same time, the selected works introduce us to the insights afforded by the temporal structure of the audio-visual recordings, opening up fundamental questions about the ontology of the gaze and the new relations with the viewer in the dimension of Smell.
