I was asked to write a text that would relate one of my works with the idea of visual smell. At first I was surprised. Over time, it gradually began to make some sense.
For me, the idea of visual smell makes me think of two times, time present and time past.
All my work is centred on the concept of memory: memory of the wounds of a time that has been left behind but lives on in the scars of the present. Everything goes round in cycles; events are forgotten and repeated with the constant idea that they are not being repeated; remembering by simply looking at the work.
It is in this idea of memory that smell also acquires unique qualities and becomes more intense, capable of suddenly carrying us back to experiences of our past, sparking good and bad memories of what we once lived, people and places once known now left behind.
I find these memories in smells, which cling to objects so that, a simple olfactory approximation enough to be transported in time by an inspiration to a good place in the past or the company of an absent loved one.
